Next Meeting, July 16, 2008

We will hold our monthly meeting on July 16 at 5:30 PM.
Plans will be made for our annual August picnic. At the June meeting
members voted for Saturday the 23rd, with the 24th as the rain date.

The Blueberry Festival will be held on Aug. 16 and 17, but we will not
participate this year.

Come join us for a social evening. Hope has volunteered the refreshments.

Trescott Property Maps and Owners

The public property records for all Trescott owners are now available
here on the Trescott Historical Society's web site. Names and addresses
are listed corresponding to the tax map lot numbers.

the Lubec Memorial Library. The regular business agenda will be followed
by a social hour including refreshments provided by Rick and Soni.

A regular meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 21.
Bring whatever you can for some "Show and Tell" fun. There are
some Lubec Herald 1950s editions we can also swop and share.
Sandy volunteered to bring refreshments and the coffee pot will
be on. Hope to see you there for a nice social evening.

Field Trip, April 13, 2008

Tentative plans have been made to visit Hamilton Cove in south Lubec
on Sunday, April 13 or April 20 at 2:00 PM and to meet at the parking lot there.

There are a number of topics we want to explore, including
fund raising, field trips, speaker programs, gravesite repairs,
finding a site for a THS building and encouraging new memberships.

Annual corporate business meeting and election of officers

On Wednesday, January 16 at 5:30 we will hold our
annual corporate business meeting and election of officers.

If you would like to nominate anyone [including yourself] to
an office, contact David and Juanita Pressley at 733-4708

so that they may make up the ballots. It is essential to do
so, as nominations shall not be made at the meeting.

It is important that the president, secretary and treasurer make
their yearly statements as required by our charter. After that
brief business we will enjoy a 'shoulders down' social hour,
including refreshments.

8. If it is stormy, the party will be held on
December 20. Appetizers will include smoked
salmon, assorted spreads and a fresh cut vegetable
platter with delicious cheese dips. Entrées will include
delectable sandwiches and Lobster Newburgh. Desserts
include an assortment of candies, cookies, and other goodies.
The traditional Yankee Swap will follow with items not to exceed
ten dollars. Neither members, guests nor friends are required to join
the game. If you could not attend our November meeting

can plan for
table settings.

Grants for History Organizations

Grants and assistance for non-profit historical societies (such as us), museums
and other non-profits will be the subject of a talk by the Down East Resource
Conservation and Development Program at the Lubec Memorial Library on Wednesday,
November 14 from 5:30 to about 7:00. Light refreshments will follow.

A very brief and informal THS meeting will then take place, just before 7:30, to
firm up a date and plans for our December holiday party.

Our invited guest is Gary Edwards, coordinator of the Cherryfield-based program, who
will discuss the types of assistance available to non-profit organizations for developing
and completing those projects which qualify under the DERC&D program's guidelines.

As we are in need of a safe place to store our town's records which we have collected,
your participation and input would mean a lot toward reaching our preservation goals.

The waters off Trescott are normally calm, and the rocky coast is well-protected,
but we occassionally experience the excitement of an Atlantic storm. These short

On Wednesday, September 19, the Trescott Historical Society will hold its monthly
business meeting from 5:30 to 6:15, followed by a monograph on early Trescott, Maine.
Family descendants and local historians will not want to miss this presentation.
The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be offered.

Machias Blueberry Festival, August 18–19, 2007

We hope you will encourage your friends to visit our kiosk at the Machias
Blueberry Festival on Saturday and Sunday, August 18 and 19, between 9 and 4.

We will be located on Court Street in the courthouse and jail parking lot.
You will easily find us by the OLD MAPS sign mounted atop a large green umbrella.

Fund raising items include the sale of the 1881 Washington County and Hancock
County atlases, an assortment of lithographs, native Lupine seeds and raffle items.

Our Annual members picnic will be held at the W. Quoddy Head Park on Sunday,

Summer Picnic, August 5, 2007

Our Annual members picnic will be held at the W. Quoddy Head Park on Sunday,
August 5 at 1:00 PM until whenever, with a rain date of Sunday, August 12.

Food and beverages will be provided. All we ask is that you invite a friend or
two and bring a chair if you don't care for picnic table benches. If you want to
contribute a side dish or dessert item it would be welcome (but not necessary).

Call Len Healy at 733-5548 before August 2nd if you can attend, so we can
plan for the burgers and dogs and other stuff.

Trescott News
County Trash Pickup Suspended

Washington County has suspended trash pickup because the company under contract is
bankrupt. Trescott property owners may take trash and garbage to the Marion Transfer
Station. IDs for use of the station at no charge will reportedly be available on July 1
and will be sent to the same address used for property tax bills unless the owner requests
otherwise. Until the IDs are available you may need proof of ownership or residency in
Trescott. The Marion Transfer Station is located on Rt. 191 near Rt. 86 and may be reached
at (207) 726-4561. It is currently open Tuesday through Saturday 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM.

THS historian, Bonnie E. Healy, will present “Digging into Trescott's Past
from Some Unlikely Places - Part 1” on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 at 6:15 PM
at the Lubec Memorial Library. Ms. Healy has been researching and collecting data
to publish the town's history for the past 15 years. (This program had been scheduled
for March but had to be postponed.)

Recent Events and Plans

Our March business meeting lasted longer than expected due to additional old
and new business items requiring discussion. Since there was not a quorum at
our February meeting to elect three board of directors, our March meeting dealt
with that. Hope Pressley, Len Healy and Bonnie Healy were reelected to serve in
that capacity for a three year term until Dec. 31, 2009.

Our March scheduled program, “Digging into Trescott's Past from Some Unlikely
Places - Part One” presented by Bonnie Healy, was shortened and will be
continued at our May 16th meeting.

Our next field trip will take place at Fred and Patty Hartman's art, bird and nature
studio Route 189, Trescott on Sunday, April 1 at 1:00 PM. He and wife Patty, a
photographer, also know a great deal about local birding and carry bird literature.

Gary Mason of Edmunds will give a presentation, “Viking Evidence in the
United States and Canada” on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at 6:15 PM at the
Lubec Memorial Library. Upon retiring as a communications specialist with a
New York City bank, he moved to Maine in 1998.

Gary Mason of lower Edmunds will be unable to present his talk on possible Viking activities
on the south coasts of Trescott and Cutler. He will, however, come and speak at some other time
about Viking explorations of Nova Scotia, ME and MA.

Let's keep up our “show and tell”. Bring in photos that we can copy for our files – pictures of
your home, your parents, family groups, grandparents, old Trescott Town Reports, and any object
of interest. Ask around for old local phone books and Lubec Heralds.

Field Trip, January 21, 2007

Our scheduled monthly field trip was spent at Lewis Jones' taxidermy workshop in Trescott. Over the past
35 years he has perfected his craft to the height in which he has been sought out by Maine as well as
out-of-state hunters, historians, and museums to mount articles of his workmanship. His own collection
is a small remarkable museum in itself.
