Press Release – June 13, 2006
Lubec Memorial Library Increasing Local Historical CollectionFrom: Lubec Memorial Library
55 Water Street
Lubec ME 04652
Contact: Suzanne Plaut, 733-2491The Lubec Memorial Library has received a grant for the purpose of increasing its local historical collection of books and computer disks. Area historians and genealogists submitted a list of the most useful materials that would enhance that collection, resulting in the purchase of the following books: New England Marriages Prior to 1700, with two Supplements; The Length and Breadth of Maine; Maine Wills 1640 - 1760, a two-volume set; Loyalists to Canada; and a number of other important historical works.
In addition, 22 Washington County census disks have been purchased covering each of the United States census years, every ten years from 1790 to 1930. The first census year merely asked how many males and females resided in a household. But by the 1930 census thirty-two separate questions were asked of each person residing in every household in the county. The 1940 U.S. Census will be released to the public by the Census Bureau in 2012.
A computer, donated by the Lubec branch of the Bar Harbor Bank, has been dedicated for viewing these census disks, and the Trescott Historical Society has contributed copies of the 22 disks. The library now has the capability of assisting local and visiting genealogists and historians searching their ancestors.
Other recent library acquisitions include the donations and permanent loans of town vital records, cemetery lists and local biographies collected by the Lubec Historical Society and the Trescott Historical Society and Social Club.
